Anaksha: Female Assassin

"Nice work overall, but..."

date: August 7, 2008

If constructive criticism is welcomed, let me point out that although I generally enjoyed the game, I found the story extremely lacking. Don't get me wrong, I read the FAQ and I can say that you did a fine job accommodating the technical issues that wouldn't allow you to use female characters with a postmodern/chauvinistic setting. If the women in that town are so oppressed that they can't even enroll to a college without having their legs broken, there would be no chance of them becoming mafia bosses. What bothered me was the fact that the storyline tried to back up Anaksha's actions as being righteous and virtuous. That seemed totally unnatural, even dangerous for the younger people (Yes, I know that it is R-rated, but you don't honestly expect a 12year to see your disclaimer and say "Oh, I'm too young for that, better go play with my Wii").

I'm not even a Catholic, but it doesn't take a Zealot to acknowledge that shooting people in the head IS bad. Even if they are rapists and murderers, and even if the system doesn't work, if you take the law in your hands and your actions cause directly ("oops, wrong target") or indirectly ("oops, I pissed the guy off so he killed that girl") the loss of another one's life, then you are a murderer too. And it's simply a matter of time until that mistake happens. What will you do then, try to snipe you own head off?

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to lecture you, all I am saying is that I enjoyed the game, but if you make a sequel try to make Anaksha look like The Punisher or Spawn, and not like Superman. The story would be a lot more interesting if she accidentally kills an innocent every now and then (well, these things DO happen when people play with big guns) Alternatively, you can manipulate the storyline so that Anaksha doesn't kill people because they have done something wrong, but because they are about to take a few lives. That would open up all kinds of possibilities! Criminals taking children as hostages, a serial killer on the loose that the police is too stupid to find out, a madman with a shotgun that must be cleared in one shot or he starts shooting innocents, and -why not?- even rival snipers hired by the mob that try to take Anaksha down before she is even able to find them. If you work on a storyline concerning a certain group of people that Anaksha is after instead of random assignments, then it would only make sense that Anaksha knows things about them, so she wouldn't be potrayed as an omniscient character who's judgement never faulters, and thus the game would feel a lot less misandric.

Ah, let me also comment on the excellent music and the smooth gameplay! The graphics were simple but beautiful and functional, and the cutscenes did indeed capture the feeling of a crime-noir. Thumbs up!

Sadly, many Pivot animations are of poor quality - but thankfully, not this one. Well done!
